Destination: Cartagena Colombia

After spending an enriching and immersive 2 days in the vibrant city of Cartagena, Colombia, I am excited to share my top recommendations that encapsulate the essence of this remarkable destination. From its stunning colonial architecture to its rich cultural heritage, Cartagena offers a plethora of experiences that cater to diverse interests. Here are my must-visit spots and activities that truly highlight the charm and allure of this coastal gem.

Castle San Felipe de Barajas

Cartagena was a primary target for pirates and Spain's enemies, making its defense crucial. The Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the largest fortress built by the Spaniards in their colonies, is a prominent feature in Cartagena. It was invincible, with tunnels designed for supplies and evacuation, allowing the detection of enemy movements and communication. Many of these tunnels are lit and open to visitors. This stunning historical site is essential for experiencing the culture of Colombia.

Walled City of Cartagena

The walls of Cartagena, completed in 1796, are among the most recognized fortifications of "La Heroíca." Built to protect the city from pirate attacks, these 11 km stone walls, complemented by fortifications and bastions, surround the historic center. Today, Cartagena, known for its picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and year-round flowering bougainvillea, attracts visitors with its romantic charm. Despite its historical facade, the city offers modern restaurants, trendy bars, and boutique shops, making it an ideal place to explore from afternoon into evening.

Old Town

The optimal way to discover the Old Town is by taking a leisurely walk, appreciating the architecture, street ambiance, and local treats. Every walking tour includes a visit to the fort wall, but make it a point to return independently for a sunset stroll along the wall, accompanied by a drink and ocean views. For shopping enthusiasts, Cartagena is perfect, featuring boutique shops, markets, and stalls with distinctive souvenirs.

Island Tour

Stay:

Hotel Casa Gloria Boutique

Cartagena offers incredible hotels and accommodations. We chose a mid-range hotel and were pleased with our choice. Staying in Old Town or Getsemani is essential. The views are stunning, and the location is unbeatable.
